I could not write my fishing story since last October. Because I recently lost my young pup, BB. He was 4 years old, too young to die. I’ve got such an empty feeling since then.
Anyway, I caught the 28 inch hatchery Steelhead at Daybreak Park of the EFL River at the end of last October. Usually I don’t have good luck on a sunny day. But I got a strong bite under knee high water. I really had a good fight with this fish.
The reason why I had a good fight, was that she bit my #10 hook. It’s kind of a small and weak hook to fight with Steelhead, I know. I didn’t expect Steelhead to be in a shallow spot, but it’s there.
When I hooked it, I felt snag a rock and the fish didn’t run soon. She moved to left and right little by little, then it ran like a rocket. Usually I check if a Steelhead has an adipose fin or not at the beginning of the fight. I found this fish was a hatchery steelhead, no adipose fin, so I could take the time to fight.
But the problem was the hook. I kept the line tense and avoided pulling too much. Also my net was too small to catch this big size of fish. Until this fish’s power was down, I kept fighting. Then one hand held the bottom of the fish’s tail and another hand covered the fish head with my net. What a struggle it is! I need a bigger net, but it’s really fun!
When I looked at my hook after the catch, I was surprised at my bent hook. I’ll use a bigger hook next time, but sometimes Steelhead loves biting smaller hooks. Well, I’ll have to find a small but tough hook to tie.
I believe BB will say, Go fishing and Catch a Big one!! Take a picture and draw it!! I’ll promise to BB, I’ll catch a big one and draw the best one!! See ya, BB, RIP!
